Determining Assessments for IPTS Teacher Education Program Redesign

Early in the process it was determined that it was easier to place indicators in courses if assessment tools were considered at the same time.  Therefore, as courses were plugged into standards, possible assessments were also listed.  In some cases, the assessment listed was currently being used while in other cases an assessment tool was listed that would need to be created at a later time.

Under the assessment column you will notice that I am using a quiz to assess indicator 1A at the introductory level in EDU 3000,  a critical question to assess learning at the developing level in EDU 3600,  and a rubric to assess proficiency in student teaching.

Assessing the Introductory Level
It was decided that a quiz is a sufficient and appropriate way to measure the introductory knowledge for many of the indicators.  For each indicator that was to be assessed with a quiz, three questions were developed. Students' who correctly answer 2 of  3 questions correct will score a 1 at the introductory level, students who get 0 or 1 question correct will score a 0 at the introductory level.  The image below show how blackboard is being used to administer and grade the quizzes and gather the data for each teacher candidate

Assessing the Developing Level
Many of the indicators can be assessed at the developing level by asking the teacher candidates to answer open ended questions.  Balckboard is also being used to administer the critical questions.

Assessing at the Proficient Level

Assessment at the proficient level will occur most often during field experience and student teaching.  In most cases, rubrics (under development) will be used to determine proficiency.
